I need an RPG where I can play as a necromancer that is like the one in Diablo 2

I still recommend the Grim Dawn early access. It is by the guys behind Titan Quest.

Occultist class has pet summonings.

But I think it's only two summons, a raven and a hellhound. Hardly the army a Necromancer would be looking for. As jokujokujoku said on the first page Din's Curse has a good necromancer class, the problem is the game itself is kind of lame. The game takes place in a randomly generated town (a bunch of square huts arranged inside a bigger square wall) with a dungeon portal in the middle. You get quests from the villagers and delve into the dungeon. Once you've done enough quests the God Din says "Good job but your curse is in another castle" and the game lets you generate a new town and dungeon and move your character there.

With Path of Exile Dominating Blow also raises the dead, briefly, as fully functional minions unlike Raise Spectre which disables things like innate auras.

Diablo 2 had something in between the two, however, with the Necromancer's Revive. I believe Sacred 2 also allowed for something similar with the Dryad involving fetishes from dead enemies, but I never got that far with my Dryad so I don't know for sure.

"RPGs in video gaming are largely defined by their use of the AD&D system. And if you're unfamiliar with D&D, it's chock damn full of stats, loot, and combat. Roleplaying is only one part of it, and many campaigns can and do revolve around dungeon crawling and little to no significant roleplaying.

Diablo and it's clones are traditional ARPGs, no doubt about it."

And you can easily have a table-top campaign be almost entirely roleplaying and little to no significant combat. It's all up to the people involved and the GM of course.

Table-top RPG's, and how they can be played and presented are just as varied as video game RPG's can be.

Also, to the person who said that Diablo and Dota were the same thing. LOL. One is an action/RPG loot fest, that'd be Diablo. The other, Dota 2, is a MOBA. They're not the same. They both control with a mouse and some hotkeys, and that have an isometric view, but that doesn't make them the same at all. Diablo is about killing things and constant progression of levels, stats and mainly, loot. Dota 2 and MOBA's in general are about a battleground with a back and forth battle to ultimately try to push into the enemies base and win the day. And you DON'T keep you levels or loot.

Oh yea, they're totally the same! LOL.
To the mattresses.

Actually, this topic kind of makes me wonder.
How many RPGs (or ARPGs) are out there that allows a necromancer to raise the dead / enemies instead of creating generic skeletons / zombies? In D2, if a sufficiently leveled/skilled necromancer raised a dead demon he killed, he got an undead demon.

I don't know if this is what you're talking about, but in Arcanum you could raise dead spirits that you've killed and extort information out of them. NPC holding out on you? Kill him and raise him, see how smug he is now.

imo nothing has come close to the necromancer from D2

two worlds two was kinda neat can make a spell that summoned like most if not all of your minions (10 max summons i think?) at one time.....but the summoned minions are like huge (or not small) and you can choose from a decent variety of different types of minions....but I found that even having 7 summons was waaayyy OverPowered (even on hard)

The Necromancer was armies of the dead. The Witch Doctor is more like squad of the dead. It might be similar in effectiveness, but its scope is far narrower.

Why not just keep playing Diablo 2?

Median XL mod takes summoning farther than any other game.

Sacred 2 -> Shadow Warrior with Rallied Souls, Nether Allegiance and some choice buffs from other aspects, Shadow Veil with Creep + Fade + Sinister Pact for that permanent invisibility(if you are into that)
and finally some Spectral Hand and Skeletal Fortification for offensive combat arts outside of minions.

Great stuff, been meaning to play that myself once I get my game on and find someone to play with.
