just saw this article on ign even tho it's kinda old

http://www.ign.com/blogs/proto-destroyer/2014/01/28/are-visual-novels-turning-mainstream/

pretty much, i'm definitely enjoying that the west is starting to get even more exposure to visual novels. i know the whole VN scene is pretty niche and doesn't cater to a lot of people simply because many don't enjoy reading blocks of text, but i find it cool that we're starting to see novels like Danganronpa and Virtue's Last Reward being localized.

anyways i'm a pretty avid fan of the VN genre even tho i've only read a few including
-rewrite (this is definitely my favorite so far)
-little busters
-steins;gate
-Katawa Shoujo
-and currently reading: If My Heart Had Wings

and others i'd rather not mention because they're pretty much hentai.

anyways any of you guys read VNs? and what's your favorite?

I haven't read one in a while, but I enjoy them. My first one was Family Project, that I bought at an anime con. Favorite ones are Clannad, Sengoku Rance, 999 and Phoenix Wright.

J-"RPG"s don't deserve the title, when they are basically TBS games with adventure elements.

"Visual Novels"? Those are comic books, right? How does one "play" a comic book?

999 is all I've played, but man, it was glorious. I need to get on Virtues Last Reward sometime for sure.

the comic book esque novels you're talking about might be referring to "graphic novels" While they're arbitrarily the same, there is a difference between the two and both are easily distinguishable between each other.

there's plenty of visual novels out there with gaming elements. Usually they're puzzle elements tho. games like:
-Phoenix Wright series,
-9 hour, 9 persons, 9 doors/Virtue's Last Reward
-Blazblue (yes it's a fighting game but the story mode is pretty much a visual novel)
-Danganronpa
