Why do games have a "Press any key/start" screen?

What's the point of those screens instead of just loading straight to the menu (which usually comes after the "press any key" screen)?

Same reason Windows OS thinks it needs UAC prompts when you do anything. So you can have a chance to back out if you loaded the wrong game/performed the wrong action.
