Flip a coin...get the other later. Both are amazing series and worth at least playing through once or twice.

Seconded.

Thirded. Ignore anyone who calls either series bad because of their own opinions.

Ignore fanboys who dismiss criticisms of some lackluster games.

Wow, thanks for all the thoughtful opinions, guys. Never expected to get so much feedback. Going to go with The Elder Scrolls for now, but I will go back and pick up Mass Effect when I'm done (however long that takes). I enjoyed the first two well enough, and I am interested in seeing how it wraps up, disappointing though the ending may be.

Me1, 2 and 3 were all huge disappointments

I fixed that for you.

ME1 set a very high bar for the following games in terms of story and choices that we claimed to carry over. The sequels feel far short in carry over and the story faltered due to the head writer changing.

ME1 delivered on everything I read about it except for teammate switching during combat which was a dropped at some point in development.

The first game is very different than the rest of the series. You got exp and leveled up wittesthat. 2 introduced the skill based system where you leveled by actually role playing your character. Redguard, if it's included in the anthology is extremely different and more like an action adventure instead of an rpg. I recommend elderscrolls. Me1 and 2 are good enough. 3 was a huge disappointment

Off topic a bit here, dude I love your sig. Im on book 9.

On topic ME is a trilogy I will love and play until I die. Even with all the crap surrounding the third one, still a solid game. First time I played it, I really felt like I was racing to save the galaxy

Mass Effect trilogy but once you get to ME3's ending turn it off immediately. The worst ending ever in video game history will make you think the entire series is horrible even if you think ME1, ME2 and 98% of ME3 is the best game ever. That's how bad the ME3 ending is.

Mass Effect series is terrible and that is an objective fact. Anyone who disagrees is clearly someone who picked up Mass Effect as their very first RPG - if you had actually ever played any good RPGs you'd know how overwhelmingly average it is.

It's a terribly overrated game with underwhelming story, combat, choice and the only redeeming factor of it is possibly the lore, but that's hardly any reason to play it.

It only gets worse as people ACTUALLY give this game acclaim only to spawn even more terrible sequels and even ruin other franchises - Dragon Age 2 comes to mind.

All I can say is thank god the series is over, but considering a 4th one is coming out I just have to hope they finally improve the damn game to be a proper RPG and not some lame cover shooter with black and white choices fit for a story written by a child.
