I think the steam tags are useful. Even promotes more business. Once the useful tags set in, they can remove the crap from the system.
Why not have a system that allows you to find games similar to your specific interests? This is essentially one of the only ways to implement it. Irrelevant tags were most likely going to be used for games either way since this is influenced by the users, even if they can't be customized.
Though it doesn't help to have non-owners be able to put tags.

I think you're the one that's confused. I wasn't crying about it being a beta. I was criticizing someone using the excuse of it being a beta as a defense of this just being generally a bad idea to let users tag the games themselves.
