Friend has an amd a10-5800k apu with amd radeon hd 7660d, what to upgrade to

He's getting pretty poor performance on a lot of modern games and is looking to upgrade. I'm not really good with this kinda stuff so I'll ask you guys. Would a 750ti work fine?

750ti would be a big improvement over the integrated as far as graphics go. The 5800k isn't that great on the CPU side of things though, is there any specific game/s he's having trouble with?

If he has enough juice to power it 660s are priced pretty competitively this week, they start at $170. The 750ti will be good on pretty much any PSU though

Throw in an actual GPU. I have the same CPU and a 660ti. Haven't had any problems with any games, ever.

From what I've seen/heard, Payday 2 runs like crap, Mass Effect 3 runs poorly, Splinter Cell Blacklist doesn't run well, and I think Dark Souls doesn't run well either.

I'd probably have told him to go for the 750ti, but I'm not sure if it would be compatible with his AMD stuff in there. Judging by your post I assume it is?

ME3 running poorly is a bit of a red flag to me as it runs well even on intel's last gen integrated. I've heard that unreal engine games don't run well on AMD CPUs but I haven't seen any numbers to back that up. UE3 games pretty much always use PhysX though so a 750ti will take some of the strain off the CPU.

As for mixing AMD and nVidia, that's not a problem. Linus Tech Tips actually built a PC with xfire 290Xs, SLI 780tis, and an intel CPU and the only issue it had was SLI acting up if it was enabled when he swapped between which gpu was handling video output.

Sounds good thanks. We'll consider a 750ti or a 660 if we can find one at a comparable price.

CPU's are not exclusive to a certain brand of GPU, and vice versa

Turns out my friend has one of these

Which is like a CPU and GPU combined if I'm reading it correctly. Does this change things?

Doesn't change anything, it's called an APU and as soon as you put in a discrete graphics cards the integrated one has no use(Unless you're one of the very few people that would crossfire with the APU).

Nah, I assumed you knew that from the start. All the advice here was given with that fact in mind.

Intel does the same thing with their current mainstream processors, it's not out of the ordinary at all.
