Recently got an Alienware x51/r2 to use as a 'gaming console'.

It works great as it boots right into steam and I just use a 360 pad exclusively on it.

It sucks having to whip out a usb mouse every time I want to play Skyrim (to click on Play) - is there a good wireless mini kb/mouse that would make this easier to manage?

I have a couple of these, haven't really had any problems out of them. I don't think you could beat them for the price.

Do you actually keep the keyboard/mouse disconnected from it most of the time?

For what you're asking for, basically any generic wireless mouse would work just fine.

That one looks like what I need - the only problem is that it's illegal to import laser pointers into Australia :\

Ah damn, that sucks. I have this so I can verify that it both works and doesn't have a laser but it's not mini at all. Basically every mini keyboard+touchpad I've ever looked at has a laser.

That one looks like it will do :). Doesn't have to be really tiny, but it will hide away quite easily.
