Thinking about upgrading to 8.1 from 7

#1gamesisgoodPosted 2/18/2014 7:09:10 PM
Will I have to re-install all of my stuff ? If I use the windows upgrader?

An upgrade isn't recommended... Both interpretations of the word.

7-8.1 isn't enough of a jump to be worth more than the 15 dollars I paid a ways back.
The windows 7 upgrade is also a bad idea. Too many risks of errors and just seemingly random behaviour. A clean full install is something I highly recommend.

Why would you want to downgrade?

Yes.

It's pretty stupid, really.

Your user accounts with their docs/photos/etc, will be transferred, and your current installation will be saved in a Windows.old folder.

You can actually reload all Steam titles without re-installation by putting the Steam folder where you want it to be and deleting the clientregistry.blob file in the Steam directory.

I do believe, however, if you upgrade from 7 to 8, and then 8 to 8.1, you'll keep all your stuff.

7 to 8.1 is a clean install. Only user settings are migrated.

I put an SSD in my laptop and decided I would reload my system. I went ahead and loaded 8.1. My only complaint is that my laptop will no longer sleep when idle. If you can get over the Start menu (or download a free replacement one), it's not bad in my opinion. It feels snappier, but that could be the SSD. My laptop also runs much cooler on average, but that could also be the SSD.

I don't think it's worth reinstalling your system to install Windows 8.1, but if you have to reinstall for other reasons, it's worth considering.

Nah not worth it. I suggest you don't change your mind too. Stay on 7 it'll be awhile before it is abandoned like XP will be in a few months.

If you're already on 7, I wouldn't bother unless you can get it for a good price.

I love 8.1. I went from 7 to 8.1 a few months back and to me it's worth it. Haters gonna hate no matter what. I boot into desktop, use the metro interface like the old start menu, and if u right click on the windows button almost every administrative option is available to you from that menu. It boots ridiculously fast and the look of the GUI is sleeker IMO. There may be some compatibility issues, but none that have really affected me.
