Onboard, but if you're an audiophile, I can see the benefit in getting a sound card.

I still have this.. X-FI F@Tality or something.
I honestly can't remember what the actual name of it is anymore.
Windows just calls it "SB XFI" in device manager.

Buuuut, it has decent driver support, plays games, has extremely useful software for signal processing, and most importantly of ALL! It has an LED and a HEAT SINK!

External card due to not having PCI slots.

Sound Blaster Omni
Another idea I had was the spy/sniper being able to climb into the soldier's rocket launcher and be launched across the map, dealing more damage, but no splash.

yeah, just cos I have one lying around. Not sure if it will still be worth using for my next motherboard, since on board sound is getting better all the time. But for now it still is.

I do, d2x in my main system and a lower end xonar in my old pc as the onboard stopped working (d2x was from this rig before I upgraded).

Sound cards will always be better than onboard sound except for the really high end boards.
