ALL headsets are by and large awful.

Get a nice pair of headphones, which will be much more expensive than the X12's but around the same price as the top tear headsets.

AKG Q701 headphones are excellent for gaming and go for $199.99 on Amazon. You can use them without an amp as well. It's better if you have one of course, but that's the case with everything.

why the hell do you recommend the Q701s to everyone as if the concept of "budget" is foreign to you

Because if you have a budget less than that you need to save up a bit. It's not difficult.

I don't recommend amps or DAC's because budget is not foreign to me.

But there's no point in recommending the Q701s without an amp. And "just save up" is silly. That's like telling someone who wants to spend $300 on a video card to just save up so they can get a 780 or something.

The Q701's are very low impedance headphones, so they can be run without an amp better than most headphones can.

And your analogy is flawed. It's more like telling someone who wants to buy a $50 video card that anything they buy at that price will be a piece of crap, so they need to save up $200.

First, while an amp isn't a necessity for the Q701s unlike their K counterparts, the soundstage (the reason you suggest them) greatly benefits from an amp. And regarding budget, the point is the same. You're telling someone to spend more as if everyone values things the same as you. Not everyone is comfortable spending $200+ on headphones, just like lots of guys aren't comfortable spending $100+ on quality jeans.

A good entry level set of cans would be the Audio Technica ATH-M50s. Decent clarity and good response across the spectrum. They are advertised as flat-response studio monitoring headphones, however I find them not so flat, especially in the very pronounced bass frequencies.
