Should I get the new Thief or should I just buy Thief/Thief 2 for 1/4 the price?

Never played a Thief game before. I see a lot of negativity around the new Thief games, and a lot of praise for the old ones. Should I bother with the new one as someone new to the series? Or would it be a better idea to just get the first two?

Graphics really aren't a big issue to me at all. I'd be more interested in level design, item usage and AI. I'm not sure whether the new Thief is just a disappointing Thief game, or a disappointing game in general.

Any help appreciated.

You can still get Thief 1 for free.

You can also try "The Dark Mod" which was inspired by the Thief series. It's standalone so you don't need anything other than the mod to play.

I wouldn't really recommend Deadly Shadows to be honest.

Deadly Shadows isn't great, but it is decent.

Modern take on games is always worse, even if the new Thief appears to be a valiant effort, it still sacrificed a lot.

If you have the luxury of not being bothered by graphics (and frankly I find the Thief games beautiful, its not because the graphic technologies that its not fun to look at, how few people are artists these days), then definitely go for the early Thief games.
