Don't most headsets have built-in mics? That's what makes them headsets rather than headphones.

It's the razer electra, it's a headset, just with the mic built into an optional wire.

Those work just fine and they're not $60.

I suppose it depends on what you plan to use the mic for... Chatting online you can get away with a $5 mic like that. Recording stuff for video commentary or other stuff that needs a cleaner sound, you'll need to spend more.

o.O A headset I've never used the mic on ever. 'blow his mind' is slightly harsh, Implying it's not one of my 4 headsets I have, and it's the one I prefer to listen through out of all of them. It's not a cheap headset.

I think a lot of the mics that people recommend are kind of expensive for what you intend to do with it. At the same time, the cheap mics like the Zalman clip on mic are real crap.

There are some mics that are sort of inbetween. Not overkill in terms of size or price, but still infinitely better than those really cheap ones. The Samson go mic is one example. It is intended for having a decent mic on the go, but also works really well for gaming. It is relatively small and does not take up too much space, it is less expensive than the full sized product, and the audio quality is easily good enough for teamspeak and things like that. It would even do very well for video commentary, podcasts and the like.
