So a buddy asked me to throw him together a PC for around $500. He just wants it as his basic media box, he doesn't plan on doing any gaming on it at all. Here's what I've thrown together so far, and I need some help paring it down a bit. I haven't really done a budget build before, and I'm not sure where to save here.
I think he may be willing to go a little over $500. I'm not certain if he wants/needs wifi or not, but I included it. I also threw in a nice looking, compact case, which might have stretched the budget a little. --- http://img356.imageshack.us/img356/8325/scrunchface2copyfx0.png http://www.xboxlc.com/cards/default/alle5.jpg
Here's to get you started: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/31zKy - Budget builds like that is where AMD APUs shine. There's no benefit to a high-end dual core like that i3-4330 in a build like that. You can run a basic HTPC on a Celeron really. - 8 GB of RAM. Useless. - The case is up to you. Or him, as it were. I picked a cheaper one that's also good. - Picked a waaaaay cheaper PSU that is still plenty of power for the build. --- -What is best in life? -To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women.
I guess it's personal. Nothing but bad experiences with Green drives, nothing but good ones with Reds. But overall I've heard far more complaints about Greens than about Reds. --- -What is best in life? -To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women.
The greens are just really cheap with head parking so aggressive they destroy the drives really fast. You can disable that function, but iirc a red is just a green with the aggressive parking disabled by default. --- Every time I try to go where I really wanna be it's already where I am, 'cuz I'm already there XBL, PSN, Steam, Origin, BSN, GFAQs, MC: PhilOnDez
Is the head parking thing easy to disable? Because that sounds like an okay way to save $20. I think I got it down to something he'll find agreeable. I'll have to get his opinion on a case and whether or not he needs wifi today. --- http://img356.imageshack.us/img356/8325/scrunchface2copyfx0.png http://www.xboxlc.com/cards/default/alle5.jpg
Looking around, it seems like more than $20 worth of work to disable it for just one drive, though if you were doing it for several then consecutive drives wouldn't be nearly as much work (lots of setup but you only have to do it once).
Basically, you know how Windows Power Management asks how long you want to wait before turning off your HDD? Greens ignore those settings and turn off after 8 seconds no matter what (unless you disable that feature by basically reflashing the bios on the drive). If you're using it as a primary drive this makes your system spectacularly unresponsive and causes a lot of undue wear and tear. --- Every time I try to go where I really wanna be it's already where I am, 'cuz I'm already there XBL, PSN, Steam, Origin, BSN, GFAQs, MC: PhilOnDez
