Why are so many young people today still so ignorant when it comes to properly..

But why is this? How is it that so many 20-somethings in the 21st century can work their way around a comp easily but when it comes to protecting it they're often just as clueless as someone in their 60s (and I know someone in their 60s that DOES a good job of keeping their computer protected lol)?

People are not properly trained, they don't think they will ever get hacked, or (my personal favorite one) "I removed my anti-virus because it was deleting all the torrents I was downloading."

If you do help desk support for a living, think of it as job security.

I skimmed through most of your post, but what I gathered is TC some friend or family member he was helping out who showed his/her ignorance about maintaining their computer.

I've seen this topic a million times here before, and its not surprising. To be honest everybody brings different skills to the table. Instead of being annoyed by people's ignorance I try and set up a sort of "work trade" kind of situation. I've got someone who does my taxes in return for me helping maintain their computer and another person who does my car repairs in exchange for PC assistance. You're known as the "PC guy", however I'm sure you have friends or family who are your "car guy", or "finance guy" or "health guy". Maybe you can exploit that instead of having the situation bother you so much.

I cleaned it up the best I could but some programs just would not uninstall, but I did get it running much better anywhoo.

Rips on people for not knowing how to use a computer, but doesn't know how to uninstall software. You should be ashamed of yourself, "PC guy".

They'd hopefully start paying better attention to what they do on or to their computer if you started charging for your tech help. As long as you continue to provide free tech support, they've got little incentive to make any change, since they can always call Synbios459 to fix the problem for free.

I assume you are doing it for free, anyway....otherwise you likely wouldn't be complaining about it here.

I'm not exactly a PC tech and know-it-all (hell I can probably solve the most basic problems, and I'd have to get a little assistance for the more serious issues) but most of the problems I ever get are hardware ones (and even then, they require replacement parts).

If you know what and what not to click online, your PC will last you as long as the hardware holds up. But hey, this is coming from a person that's surrounded by dunderheads mindlessly clicking on whatever their buddies are sharing on Failbook.
