Whats a better choice? Monitor and speakers, or HDTV with built in speakers?

depends on your price range.............

the Logitech G35 are around 130 and are awesome
then there are Sennheiser which anything by them is amazing but a bit pricey
Astro A40 are nice but are like 200 and you have to have a optical to use them

How do these compare to your suggestions?

one thing you never want to ever do is use your TVs built in speakers for anything ever.

Run a monitor and a tv like I do. I use a TV for watching video, sometimes use the tv for speakers even with a dual screen setup, and then serious ( or quiet ) gaming it is headphones.

You can spend $400 on a console and $400 on a cheap PC, or you can spend $800 to build your own and have the best of both worlds.

Depends on how you want to play. Do you want to sit at a desk then monitor. Also Monitors are more gaming focused so picture will be a bit better. Do you want to sit on a recliner or couch and play on a massive screen that TV is way to go.

I've done both and just prefer the TV. A 60" TV while either posted back in my big comfy recliner or lounging out in my couch is the only way to game for me.

Monitor and speakers of course.

I really doubt the quality of the speakers in the HDTV while you can choose your own speakers. A few monitors comes with speakers as well, BUT, the quality of the speakers is even more dubious. I suggest monitor and speakers either way for PC gaming.

And if you are using a TV table as your monitor stand, go big with the speakers, I mean those big 2.0 powered studio monitors.

High quality headphones > Speaker

Every time.

This is basically objectively wrong. Unless you're comparing $300 headphones to $50 speakers or something.
