Microsoft will reveal the latest iteration of its graphics API, DirectX 12, later this month at the Games Developers Conference in San Francisco. Microsoft confirmed the new platform via a landing page on the DirectX blog as well as posting in the event's session schedule. At 10am PT on March 20, Anuj Gosalia, Windows graphics development manager at Microsoft will present the new API, though additional details remain scarce. The panel's description highlights how the company plans to deliver on demands of better tools for developers, added performance, and support for an "unparalleled assortment of hardware," with specific mention of PCs, tablets, phones, and consoles.

DirectX 12 will be the first generational leap for the platform since DirectX 11 made its debut in 2008.

Most games don't even use DX11 so it'll be a long while until DX12 becomes any kind of standard.

I'm so excited, especially about the performance gains. From what I'm reading they'll be massive since rumor has it that DX12 will bring back low-level support, not unlike how it was done in the DoS days.

Whatever happen to 11.1? Wikipedia shows only two games using it: Star Trek Online and Battlefield 4

Apparently DirectX 11.2 already has some low level access but currently most DirectX 11 games are based off 11.1 so we haven't seen the benefits of it.. I know a lot of people think Microsoft is bringing low level access because they are worried about Mantle but it looks like Microsoft was already heading this direction regardless of whether Mantle came out or not..

Microsoft has said that with the next version of DirectX (11.2) on the Windows platform, they’ll be able to bring the same benefits from the low-level API found in the Xbox One to the PC through their own efforts and not, as previously thought, through AMD’s Mantle API.

“Developers creating content for the Xbox One are able to use the same programming constructs across Windows and Xbox, and benefit from all the improvements that have been introduced on Windows. With Xbox One we have also made significant enhancements to the implementation of Direct3D 11, especially in the area of runtime overhead,” the company writes.

The final ingredient is something that Microsoft didn’t talk much about – latency. With the world fixating on benchmarking graphics card performance based on how timeously they complete a frame and send it to the monitor, it’s vital that the API they’re using makes the process of rendering the game into your frame buffer and to your monitor as quick as possible, with little overheads to account for.

Microsoft claims they’ve re-worked the latency in Direct X 11.2 and have dropped the total latency from 3 frames for every 60 to less than one frame for every 60. They’ve dropped latency by a factor of three, which is a big improvement.

It'll be a few years before developers even start touching DX12, why waste time on something with very few customers?

Considering the consoles are stuck at 11.2, yeah, not seeing it anytime soon

Yeah, I just let him talk out of his ass knowing he was completely wrong.

I didn't know that the consoles use 11.2 though.
