Gamefaqs help me fix this computer

#1kickthegnomePosted 3/11/2014 7:01:30 AM
I've got an hp pavilion hp pavilion p6-2100 computer that refuses to boot.

When i turn it on i get the blue led power light. The light then becomes orange and blinks. With every blink I get a beep. It blinks/beeps 6 times.

It's an ami motherboard so i've diagnosed it as an a20 gate error "The keyboard controller IC has failed, which is not allowing Gate A20 to switch the processor to protected mode. Replace the keyboard controller".

However there is no keyboard input on this computer. It's all usb (though i'm not sure if this would make any difference. I've heard you can switch to a usb keyboard to avoid the a20).

Any advice for things to try to fix it? Or is it dead?

Try a BIOS reset. Try a different keyboard.

Can you explain why? I thought this was the standard way to reset the BIOS?

If you must, fine. But make sure you know EXACTLY what you are doing.

Motherboard dead.

You can spend $400 on a console and $400 on a cheap PC, or you can spend $800 to build your own and have the best of both worlds.

I have never hurt a computer by trying to reset the BIOS in this manor, if a computer fails to work after resetting the BIOS it is because it was already screwed up, not because you didn't move the pin and the battery in the right order...

Well first off is the PC new? If so this is the manufacturers issue, not yours.

The pc is not new it's about 2 years old. And it's not mine I'm fixing it for someone.

I tried a new keyboard and got nothing. I haven't reset the bios yet (though a brief explanation will help if u guys can give me one)
