Poll: So is "3D gaming" on PC dead?

Oculus is not the same kind of 3D.

Nope but the software still needs to have 3d in mind and THAT is the current problem. The differing techniques for breaking down a scene into 2 differing images is largely irrelevant. Whether its side by side, interlaced, polarized... whatever, it doesn't matter as those are easily converted.

There is a Fine Line between "The Future of the Industry" and a "Fad" 3D gaming is the latter.

Oculus Rift is not the same kind of 3d though, so that doesn't count, though i also doubt that will ever catch on either.

Why are you all saying its not the same sort of 3d? It absolutely is. The key difference is now camera control is operated by your head as well. That's it.

All 3D is a form of stereoscopy, they are all achieved by performing the same function, filtering a different image into each eye, the only difference is the way they do this.

Saying "it's not the same" is completely irrelevant.

Is the 3d on gaming the same as 3d on the 3ds or does it require glasses? I actually love the effect on the 3ds.

You can spend $400 on a console and $400 on a cheap PC, or you can spend $800 to build your own and have the best of both worlds.

3D relying on shutter glasses? Yes, that's pretty damn worthless in my opinion. I mean, it might be neat, but few games are made specifically to take advantage of 3D because it's probably a pretty niche audience.

3D as in Oculus rift? That's going to be considerably different since you can look in any direction, and combined with headphones, it'll make the level of immersion go way up. However, unless you bought a dev kit, you can't use the rift yet.

Of course I haven't used either one yet. I can only speculate, however I have tried 3D vision using standard 3D glasses (red/blue) and while the effect was kinda neat, I felt the effect was ruined every time I glanced away from the monitor (which again is why I think the Rift is going to be a much bigger deal).

It can't be dead if it hasn't even started yet.

Once the Oculus Rift launches and we get a chance to mess with it for a year or so, we can make a better informed assessment.

The Oculus Rift has garnered infinitely more support than any previous form of VR technology. It is also intended to be affordable, and a lot of developers are looking at it with interest. I know Valve has already helped with a working version of HL2 for the Rift.

I have high hopes that it succeeds. The industry needs a breakthrough like this.

It isn't dead and won't "resurface". It's still a thing that's going on.
