Installed new GPU, PC won't boot

#1MattyPPosted 3/12/2014 11:12:55 AM
So I have my computer taken apart right now and am trying to replace my Radeon HD 7850 with a GTX 770

I have everything all hooked up, and when I turn on the PC, it is stuck at the boot screen where is asks you to press esc for bootup options, which doesn't actualy do anything ... it just freezes there

I have an AMD FX-8150 3.6GHz processor and a Corsair TX Series 750W PSU

Any ideas?
I have never used an Nvidia card before ... I was thinking maybe if I installed some drivers onto it beforehand it might boot up, but it won't let me install an nvidia driver without an nvidia card in the PC already.
I can't boot in safe mode or anything like that, since it just freezes at the boot screen when I try to turn on the PC.

Any ideas?

Oh, and the fan starts on the card, if that means anything ...

Reseat the card and cables. Try a BIOS reset.

Did you delete the old drivers before you took out the Radeon?

If not, reinstall the radeon, go into device manager, do an uninstall+driver delete and try again.

if using uefi and windows 8 try setting secure boot to legacy.

If not, reinstall the radeon, go into device manager, do an uninstall+driver delete and try again.

If it's not even finishing booting it's not a driver issue.

Put the old card back in and try to boot it. Does it work?

maybe you knocked a SATA cable loose or something.

I tried resetting the BIOS, and that did nothing

Also, yes the computer works when I put the old graphics card back in (in fact, I am using that PC right now with the 7850 put back in)
I did uninstall+delete the radeon drivers before I put the new card in.

I have no clue what uefi means ... so I don't know what to do about that :P

The computer boots up and is still stuck on the boot screen when I use the GTX 770

Check and see if there's a bios update available for your motherboard. You are plugging in both of the pci-e power connectors the 770 requires, aren't you? I don't think just doing one would cause a no-boot situation but hey, you never know.

Do you know for sure if the 770 works on another computer?
