It's been forever so I don't remember exactly, but I don't think the original games had so much of an "achievement unlocked!" feel when looting. And the more open-endedness made arbitrary loots more palatable. Also, gaming was more primitive back then--didn't have the graphics/animation to make things feel all that realistic. A candlestick on a shelf was an easy representation of something to steal.

I don't really know exactly what I'm getting at, but I think they could have moved beyond that in a Thief sequel that of course we didn't get.
