For my 2 player gaming nights, I need more games. We're going through Hammerwatch and for us thats all we need, adventuring in a dungeon, killing stuff, getting gold to upgrade ourselves, its simple but it works.
That new Gauntlet game coming up looks right up that alley, too.
I just don't like corridor or arena beat-em-up. Feeling like you're exploring and on an adventure, and not just following a line, is pretty important. Otherwise it needs to be action-packed enough (we just felt asleep in front of Trine, for instance).
Must be playable locally on 1 computer. Doesn't have to be new.
Hunted: Demons Forge is a cool 2 player 3rd person action/rpgish lite type of game. Not sure exactly how co op works. I actually played it on cosole and they had online and lan options I think. I was thinking of picking this game up for a replay on PC next time its on a steam sale, I thought it was good underrated game.
edit: Sounds like you might have to go through some 3rd party programs to get co op to work nowadays, so buy at your own risk.
Quick search tells me the PC version (only the PC version) doesn't have local coop, unfortunately.
i thought id mention towerfall ascention you might not like it but me and my cousin play it all the time

You'd probably classify it as a Corridor Beat Em Up but I had a lot of fun playing Castle Crashers with a friend. It's coop, but at the end of each boss fight you fight each other for the privilege of rescuing the princess that was kidnapped. There are also arenas as well but you don't have to do them. Basically it's just murdering a ton of the same enemy and if you can finish you can play as that enemy.
Lots of characters to unlock, lots of leveling to do and each character has 3 (maybe 4? Been a while) mostly unique skills to unlock. There's also a ton of weapons, some of which have procs. Then there's the companion animals to unlock, treasures to find, and Easter eggs (mostly newgrounds references).
If you want to do coop you'll need two controllers. There's a trick to get it working with one controller and the keyboard but I never tried it so I don't know what the trick is.
Another option would be borderlands 2 with the split screen mod. It's kinda official, it was released by someone who works at Gearbox so I assume it works well. I always just played with friends on console though.
Every time I try to go where I really wanna be it's already where I am, 'cuz I'm already there

Well, FPS with controllers are out and Castle Crashers was played to death, doesn't fit my criterias at all, I'm not much into beat-em-up but it was good mindless 4 player fun, yes.
Towerfall Ascention isn't that either, and doesn't appeal to me, honestly.
I've done looked through lists and it gets old when you have to check them out elsewhere one by one and guess if its something that'll work for our game nights, which tends to be us playing games I picked at random and finding out that they are way too short, or lacking in actions, or are just X of the many things we don't like to play, especially with some alcohol involved.
Just saying I can google lists too, I just ask specifics for a reason.
I don't think I've played anything fitting this description since Gladiator.
Sacred 2 has coop, not sure if it's local or controller compatible though. >_>
