is 90-100 dollars normal to get a tech person to install your operating system?

If you want a legit copy, yes.

what on earth are you talking about?

He's talking about having somebody install it for him and charging him 90 dollars for it, not the price of the OS.

There's nothing legitimate or illegitimate about it.

I wonder if TC is dealing with Canada Computers, they tend to be slightly psycho when dolling out labor charges for new systems / installs.

For example:

http://www.canadacomputers.com/sysconfigure.php?sys=5

Low end gaming rig.

OS install, $60
MS Office install: $30
Security Install: $20

Their labour charges are not included in the quote for the system itself.

I think we ought always to entertain our opinions with some measure of doubt. I shouldn't wish people dogmatically to believe any philosophy, not even mine.

When I was parting out my system they offered to build it for $50 which honestly isn't that unreasonable considering it took me a couple hours to do everything anyways. My time could have been better spent elsewhere I suppose.

It's not any different than paying someone to do your taxes. You could do it yourself for cheaper, but if you don't have the knowledge to do it or correct problems and mistakes along the way you're better off hiring someone.

its a good analogy actually.

get tax software, input your numbers into the appropriate boxes, click next, boom, taxes finished.
not hard.

You don't even have to do that anymore. I just put in a couple of ID numbers off my W-2 and it puts in all the other numbers for me >_>.

Add a house and some home renovation, kids, investments, capital gain, moving states somewhere in between, and it gets to be a bit more than that. Its still easy, but it takes time. I still do it myself, but its easy to see why many won't. (Bonus point if you have a split family and did home renovation, as well as work from home and have to itemize deductions...then its just torture).

Kind of the same deal here. Installing the OS is quick, but installing all the updates, drivers, etc, takes a bit. Its trivial, but it depends how much you value your time. I do it myself, but only because lugging my computer to someone takes longer than installing everything myself. If it wasn't for that...I have better things to do with my life. Same reason I'll hire someone when I move, or pay someone to clean my place, or paint, or....

What next, are they going to charge you $80 to click on your start menu?

Installing Windows is about as difficult as installing Steam.

The $100 is called the stupid tax. If you are stupid, then sure, go ahead and pay it.

I work at Staples Canada and that's what we'd try to charge you over here for it basically.

Not even remotely worth it but if you really can't be bothered go ahead :S
