I'm not trying to be a hipster, but I liked From Software before it was cool and I thought King's Field: The Ancient City blew the Souls series out of the water.

Too answer your question OP, just go on GoG and look through their classic first person RPG's. Watch a few gameplay videos and see if you see something that appeals to you.

King's Field: The Ancient City is one of my favorite PS2 games but I haven't found anything quite like it yet (most notably the metroidvania gameplay).

King's Field is my favorite series ever. I've played the first(American) and Second(American) a 100 times a piece. I have never found a game as deep in lore or as diverse in gameplay as it, till Demon Souls. Although not exactly like King's Field it does have a very nice environment and a ton of lore. The gameplay isn't as diverse, but the world itself is enough to keep you enthralled.

So, as far as games go
Demon Souls
Dark Souls 1/2
Arx Fatalis w/ Arx Libertatis mod

While I don't think it's exactly what you're looking for, most rogue likes would also fit your description.

I've only played the first King's Field but I never finished it, I should do that sometime or check out the later games in the series. I've been curious about it for a while.

Don't even try, man.

You can spend $400 on a console and $400 on a cheap PC, or you can spend $800 to build your own and have the best of both worlds.

lol @ Dark souls being anything similar to King's Field... King's Field was actually fun, and interesting to play Dark Souls is a joke.

Don't listen to this guy. Dark Souls is the most enjoyable game I've played in the past 2 years.

If you haven't played it, it's exactly what you're looking for. Give it a go now, and know that Dark Souls 2 comes out April 25th. There is no reason to wait for Dark Souls 2. Enjoy Dark Souls now and then more Dark Souls later.

Dark souls is nothing like King's field... I mean really, he asked for games like King's Field.... Dark Souls = nothing like it.

aside from the fact that Dark Souls sucks... it's nothing like King's Field.

What sucks are 3/4 the games you've played on your xbox >_>

yep, you're right, they are both the same games... I mean one is first person, the other is third person....

sounds like you're a little jelly about all the games I own. It's ok, I understand what it's like when you can't afford to buy games that look interesting. As for the quality of my games... meh, how good games are is subjective, also I haven't played my xbox in years, my kids play it now.

I loved King's field 1 and 2... I didn't give a rat's ass about Dark Souls.

I'd have to say the only other first person RPG that could come close to the same atmosphere as King's Field 1 or 2 would be Morrowind.. I'm not saying it's "the same"... I'm just saying I've never felt anything else came close to the same feel for me.

It's just too bad the combat in Morrowind wasn't better...If you could fix the combat with a mod, you might get the same enjoyment out of Morrowind (if you haven't already tried it).

I've been asking this question for a few years now. Only Demon's/Dark Souls scratched the itch somewhat. Otherwise... I don't know... Myst series??? I always placed King's Field somewhere between that and Elder Scrolls.
