PC Win8.1 Won't Restart/Shutdown

#1BeerOnTapPosted 3/21/2014 10:00:36 PM
Okay so I made this topic a while ago, but now I have more info.

So sometimes, lately, when I go to shutdown or restart (especially restart) it will just hang, and not do it.

If I wait a really long time, it finally shows the blue screen with a frowny face and says "windows encountered problems. Collecting information" -something to that effect..

Then it reboots itself.

How do I access these logs and troubleshoot this situation?

I don't know if it works the same but there's a program called "who crashed" that will go through the core dumps or whatever and tell you what the error was and what program crashed.

usually registry will fix stuff like this its because of bad registries that you get long startup and shutdown on windows. why would you advise against it unless you had a personal bad experience which is more likely due to over aggressive registry cleaner program which corrupted your boot registry

So I should try that who crashed thang ???
Is there a way I can just tell which program it is by checking the logs it creates (it says it is creating logs)

Sounds like your blue screening.

Make sure all your drivers are up to date. If still no good, return the device and replace it because it probably has bad hardware.

A run of CCleaner is fine, you look more like your falling for your own misconceptions of "Registry is so dangerous that no one should ever touch it!". It could possibly fix an issue where the system is looking for something that no longer exists or it's registry hook was invalidated by someone/another program moving a file that the system is looking to interact with in the shutdown/sleep process.

Despite that, however, the issue is most likely to do with your hardware, drivers, and software installed on your computer interacting in a strange way that causes everything to fall apart. When did the bluescreens start, did you install any software or hardware recently and then the issue started? Have you updated your motherboard/soundcard/GPU/NIC/mouse,keyboard,headset,whatever etc etc... devices to their newest drivers & firmware?

The last time I was having bluescreens is when Hamachi had a bad time working with my motherboards onboard NIC and caused it to bluescreen when other computers on the network tried to access my computer. Hamachi's software and my motherboard's drivers just couldn't co-exist so I had to either get a plug in NIC or uninstall Hamachi. What I'm getting at by telling you about this experience is that something you installed recently is likely the cause of the problems.
