Building a PC or buying laptop for old computer illiterate lady next door

#11PhilOnDezPosted 3/26/2014 8:22:13 PM(edited)
What software is she going to be needing though? That's the question. You said she's computer illiterate and the chromebook maintains itself and (as far as I know) there's no viruses for it. Is she going to be using Facebook, browser games, email, and maybe a bit of shopping? It'll do all that. For the money you pay you can't even come close to a windows machine. The OS is lightweight as all get out (and running from an SSD to boot) and the manufacturer doesn't have to pay royalties to use it, a $250 chromebook will be comparable to a $300-350 windows machine.

E: Saw where you said what it needs to do. It will create .docs via Google's office thing and it'll handle online movies. Watching DVDs will be a pain if it's even possible but even on windows that isn't something I'd want to teach someone who's never used a computer before to do.

If you could up the budget I would almost just go with a Ipad or some form of tablet for her. Unless she wants to plays PC games .

Most old PC illiterate people I have helped get PC's for I end up spending days fixing there PC's because they do stupid stuff with them and get them either loaded with viruses or for some reason or delete some thing they were not suppose to and it messes up the OS.

Its like teaching a 5 year old how to drive if you try and teach them any thing. They don't seem to have the attention span to want to learn at least some basics.

So now when any of them ask me about getting a PC I say get a Ipad. because I know that can't screw that up. I got my mom a Ipad for Christmas she has no problem using it and she is one of the most tech illiterate people I know.

You mentioned that she uses it to watch DVDs. You should get one with an optical drive.
