Good graphics card for a Q6600 pc?

#11silvergokuZ(Topic Creator)Posted 3/28/2014 7:17:09 PM
Im back, well its DDR3 ram as its a later released board with usb 3 ports and all that.

I just put it in new case as in my old case with a 6870 it was about 35-45 degrees idle just on firefox, though gaming temps didnt really jump much i.e around 60.

I used to run it with Sonic Generations which is a recentish game and I was ok with the FPS on it, I dont intend to play games like Battlefield 4 on it just mostly emulation machine just want to know if I put on a random game its playable.

Battlefield 4 should actually run pretty nice even on the Q6600 if using Mantle

Especially for PCSX2 and Dolphin though, the Q6600 is a serious clog.

Q6600 OC'd is probably better than most of AMD's offerings and most i3s. Bottlenecks? LOL. I had a dual core wolfdale (E7300 I think?) around 3 Ghz and it ran modded Skyrim just fine.

I would get a 760 or a 660.

You mentioned running Gamecube emulators. How does F-Zero GX run for you? My i5-2500k struggles to run the game without noticeable skipping and audio glitches.

Nah, you'd have to hit some pretty high speeds to stack up with AMD offerings or newer i3s. Like, you'd pretty much have to hit the same speed as the AMD processor.
It's not terrible, though. Most games should play acceptably on it still. I'd say the recommendation for 750 or 750Ti is a good choice.

750ti is the best option IMO.

Fair enough

I would attest from my own anecdotal experiences that most modern games are more concerned with your graphics card and less on how powerful your CPU is. Games with lots of AI routines (strategy games, for example) and emulators seem to really max out CPUs though.

Because F-zero runs like crap on everything like Twilight Princess and Mario Galaxy 2.

LOL uh yeah it does. IF you have an Nvidia Nforce 4 motherboard that has very slow lanes it will bottleneck the hell out of that card and the rest of the system as well as slow ass ram.

I have a q6600 and a 6970 which runs great and has room for improvement, when I tossed my r9 290x in there for a test it was way better.

that CPU is junk

Yeah . . . it'll only play about 99% of all games on Steam at a respectable framerate.

That is what you meant by "junk" .. right?

If respectable we mean some games tanking into unplayability, yeah, I guess so.

Sure, it still works and you can get by, but people need to seriously stop acting like this CPU doesn't cut your frames in half or a third in some titles.
