Okay, I'm a total noob to PC gaming and I'm running this on your average crappy PC with Windows 7 OS and using the cheapest router available. (I'm also connecting to it using wi-fi, if that's relevant)

Steam isn't wanting to update, at all. Every time I try to connect, I get a message saying "Fatal Error- Steam needs to be connected to the Internet to Update", and, well, I'm connected to the internet. I've made sure that I don't have any programs interfering with Steam (I checked the list), and Support has told me to delete certain files from the Steam folder, except those files don't exist. I sent them a picture with this image

,hoping to get more detailed instructions on what to do. But they messaged me back, with the same message. So GameFAQs, my fate is in your hands.

Please help. I just want to play Portal....

Try running Steam as an admin.

Did you try what's listed here on the Network Connectivity support article?

Yes, but I followed the instructions and it led me to the conclusion of trying to start it in tcp mode, which fixed nothing.

It works for you because you have access to YOUR support ticket. WE however do not. It's sorta like if I tried to send you a link to my cart on Amazon, you'd tell me that wasn't a working link even though it would work just fine for me.

Oh, that makes sense. In that case, ignore the link.

Well, does anyone else have suggestions? I JUST WANT TO PLAY PORTAL!

What antivirus/firewall(s) do you have?

It could also be that your router is simply refusing the connection.

Reinstall Steam?

You've probably tried this, but you didn't mention it.
