How long do you go before upgrading your video card?

Every 5 years because I'm poor. If I could afford it, it would be every year.

My plan is every two years now. When I had less money, it definitely wasn't as frequent.

Every year after AMD and Nvidia release their cards. But this time I waited too long and the mining boom hit so I missed out on reasonably priced r9 290's.

Whenever I can't get 50+ frames on Ultra. Then I upgrade.

I built this PC in September 2011, and I haven't upgarded the GPU (or anything else) yet. GTX 460 1GB. I've considered upgrading it, but A) the 460 has been rock solid, and I don't want to risk replacing it with something unreliable, B) Warband is pretty much the only game I bother with, and C) I've been impressed by the performance of the 750Ti and want to wait and see how the rest of the new cards perform before deciding what to buy.

When I can't run games at the settings I desire. Took me ~4 years to go from my 4870 to my 7870.

Basically, I play my games and enjoy them, and when I start noticing the game I want to play is slowing down, or doesn't look good enough for me, or whatever, that's when I start thinking about upgrades.

In practice that can be as short a period as 1.5 years (if I buy a midrange card) or it could be 3+ (for high end cards).

I just built a whole new computer with a GTX 780 so I probably won't upgrade until DX12 cards come out, unless there's some new advancement that makes a new card desirable.

4 years, as long as I can run at medium-high settings with 60fps I'm fine.

Lemme put it this way, if my friend didnt give me his old 580, I'd still be milking my 5850 for all it's worth. As long as the game runs at playable FPS, I will stick with my hardware. I dont have money for expensive upgrades, so I run my PCs into the ground.

Wow that's a good friend, you got a hand-me-down video card that's better than the one I bought 2 years ago (560ti).
