Re: Connecting a console to a computer monitor through DVI

#1ZBug_Posted 3/30/2014 5:42:16 PM
So I've been looking into how to do this, and it's pretty straight forward; I need an HDMI to DVI converter. However, here's where my question lies:

My monitor isn't the one with the DVI plug on it, my rig is.

Will this be a problem when trying to connect a console to my monitor? I imagine I'll just have to turn the computer on while I'm playing (making it a rather inconvenient method, i'll admit), but I don't know if it's that simple.

Ok, so i've actually come to another question:

I have external speakers hooked up to my computer through a receiver, which is plugged directly into my computers headphone jack using a Y cable.
Now, I know that if I hook up a console to my computer through HDMI/DVI I need a separate audio source. However, I don't know how I'd be able to hook-up my console to the speakers. I was told that i'd need an adapter that converts the Red/White/ cables into a single 1/8 connections.
But how would I be able to connect this to the speakers?

Any help, suggestions, or alternate solutions, are very much appreciated.

In all likelihood all the ports on your PC are outputs, you'd need a capture card with an input in your PC.

I didn't even think of that...

I was following this
http://ttocs.hubpages.com/hub/How-to-Connect-Your-PS3Xbox-360Wii-to-a-Computer-Monitor

and was planning to get the HDMI Female to DVI-D Male Adapter.

However, like I said, the DVI is on the PC, so I don't know if it'd even work

So you use a dvi-vga connector? Does the monitor only have vga input?

The monitor itself doesn't have DVI or HDMI inputs on it. The reason I wanted to use the monitor is because my TV is SD, and I wanted to play my console game in HD. My computer however has two DVI plugs on it (which upon further inspection i'm pretty sure they are both inputs), one of which my monitor is plugged into.

Edit: which actually makes me think, maybe I want something more like this http://imgur.com/qM47F3Q and just plug that into the back of my console?

I still don't know how i'd get audio though.

Your monitor has inputs. Your PC has outputs. If your monitor doesn't have DVI or HDMI inputs, what are you connecting it with?

OK, I must be getting myself mixed up here (I had inputs and outputs backwards i guess).

This is what is on my computer http://imgur.com/nYd6UnN

This is what my monitor is using to plug into the computer http://imgur.com/fWZ3OdX

So if I had this http://imgur.com/qM47F3Q and plugged it into the back of my console I could get video to the monitor, right?

So your monitor does have a DVI input and that's what you're using. So, you just need an HDMI to DVI adapter. What console are you trying to hook up? If you have an Xbox 360 like me, you would need these as well for audio:
