Right, the third link however is a converter, so I can plug it into the HDMI port on my console (specifically ps3), then plug my monitor into the DVI end of the converter

I'm trying to hook it up to the PS3.

Thanks for the help so far, and sorry for my stupid mix up.

not once have you said what's inputs your monitor has or what monitor you have... with your lack of knowledge shown in this topic, i wouldnt be surprised if you had an hdmi port on the back of the monitor.

Do you know the make and model of your monitor?
The PS3 requires the monitor to support HDCP for you to be able to get any picture from it.
If your monitor does not support HDCP you'll get nothing but a black screen.

That's true, I didn't even think of it. Any modern monitor should be fine tho.

OK, so I just looked into this and one way to check is based on screen resolution, the highest my monitor can use is 1280x720, which means it's 720p, which also means it's not HDCP compatible.

So even if I set my PS3 display settings to 720p I won't get any picture on my monitor?

Yeh, that's not going to work as it always outputs an HDCP signal. The Ps4 has an option to turn off HDCP unlike the PS3.

Alright, what about xbox 360? Does it output HDCP as well?

Resolution isn't a good way to tell if your monitor supports HDCP, there are monitors with all kinds of resolutions, including 720, that support HDCP.
The only way to tell if your monitor supports HDCP is to check the specs on the manufacturers web site.
