Better processor for gaming?

Intel or AMD?

Something mid range too. I've been looking at the possibility of crossfiring an APU (AMD A10-7850K) with the R7 250. Would that just be a waste of money?

Don't bother with the crossfire, don't bother with A8/A10 go intel + gpu

Ignore below posts, this is correct.

I'm not exactly sure how powerful that would be, but I doubt it's worth nearly $300 altogether.

I'd suggest getting an FX-6300 + R9 270 at that price range. Two of the best budget components. Should handle 1080p gaming very nicely.

Yes it's a waste of money. It seems like a neat low budget idea. I was looking into doing it and from my findings there was about a 10% boost in crossfire at best. It was concluded that you were better off buying a separate CPU and GPU and it would be much better performance for only a tiny bit more money. Plus you won't have any crossfire issues with any games.

In fact this combo, for only about $10, would absolutely smoke that APU crossfire combo:

Definitely don't go hybrid crossfire. It's a huge waste, you can get better performance out of a $80 fm2+ Athlon or Haswell Pentium and a $100 dedicated gpu and save yourself a ton of cash or as was listed above spend a bit more and get a lot more performance.

Intel is going to be faster than AMD clock for clock but AMD ships at higher clocks and offers more cores for the price. The higher clocks still don't close the gap though, especially not when you compare it to Haswell. Most games are very lightly threaded so in all but a handful of exceptions an i5 will outperform anything amd offers.

Going by napkin math and barring any shenanigans involving the consoles moving tasks typically handled by the CPU to the gpu a 4670k with a mild overclock should be capable of over 60 fps for the entirety of this console gen.

i7-4960X would probably be the best one.

At the moment, Intel has the performance crown. That said, their lower end offers don't really compare to AMD's offerings in terms of price:performance. If you're getting a discrete GPU, there's little point in going for the A series APUs.

Intel's low end stuff is fine. The 6300 is the only AMD CPU/APU I'd consider (and I usually recommend it for mid-low budget builds alongside an i3 depending on what the person is wanting to do). There's not really anything out that a Haswell Pentium can't make playable aside from maybe (MAYBE, I haven't seen any numbers one way or the other) BF4 but Crysis 3 is playable on them and it uses 8 threads so obviously BF4 should be good 90% of the time if not more.
