My friend doesn't want to upgrade his 13 year old laptop...

It's an old bulky Dell and he recently upgraded it to Windows 8.1. I've tried his laptop and surprisingly this thing is good enough for web browsing, school work, text based social networking, and other simple things. The only downside is video runs very choppy and some keys don't work so he uses a usb keyboard. He said it'd be nice if he can upgrade and I told him a good cheap laptop for around $500 will be a very good upgrade. Sadly he has a hard time letting go of it because he's just done a lot of work on it. I told him I can easily back up his files but he says he wants to use it until the end of its lifespan.

Is there any way I can convince him?

Just let him use it till it dies. If he doesn't watch a lot of video, then what's the problem? At least your friend is getting the most out of his hardware.

My parents computer is from 2003; it still functions therefore they will not get a new one.

Well he does want to watch videos on the laptop but most of the time he just does it on his phone.

well if he doesn't want to do it and wants to beat a near dead horse for as long as he can let him. He's not gaming on the thing. I would agree that for $400-$500 you can get a decent Quad Core Laptop but if he is fine using that thing till it dies more power to him.

Surprised a laptop that is that old can run windows 8.

Not to sound harsh, but why do you care? If he's not comfortable upgrading yet, then don't force him. From your post, it sounds like you're the one who has problems with his computer and not him.

Again, not trying to sound rude.

I'm finding it pretty hard to believe a laptop from 2001 is running windows 8.1.

I'm finding it pretty hard to believe that nobody before you has mentioned this.
