Mine is overclocked to 4.2 ghz, now i know more and more games are starting to utilize 8 cores, but how future proof am I for just 1080p gaming? I also have a GTX 770 2b gb and 8 gb ram.

I think you'll be fine with a quad core. Compared to other PC parts the CPU is the most future proof. Generally a CPU like the i7-920 can still game fairly well today. As opposed a GPU from that time period would be miserable.

You'll be 1080p gaming for a while with that combo with very high to maxed out settings on almost all your games.

I was just worried about future games that support 8 core for ai and physics, but from what i've read it would only be like a 5% difference.

This, with the Titan X GPU coming out for $3000, you're pretty much done for.

no such thing as future proof

You should be good for a long time, just overclock your parts more when they start strugging to run high settings. Even if developers start taking advantage of octo cores on all the new games it won't instantly phase out quad cores and make them obsolete. I imagine it will take a long while for octo cores to become the new standard.
