The best PC gaming forum?

the Steam forums/general discussion is the most popular for sure

PCH

If you can get past the ****ery, idiocy of the trolls, and general hatred from everyone to everyone, there are quite a few very knowledgeable people here.

People IRL suck. Online people do, too, but who cares about that? Most people we know IRL are just circumstances. Why do you think people who are friends in school drift apart afterwards? They're only friends because they see each other everyday. It's convenient and that person is THERE.

At least online we have a common interest. And whilst there can be disagreements and you're not going to like everyone, we can still talk about things here. Anyone else sick of making small talk about weather and traffic and crap?

The people I have met have almost zero interest in games. The women I meet only play Candy Crush Saga, (though one says she plays CoD but I've never seen her game, she even asked my help to get her boyfriend a gift for Xmas and I suggested stuff like Borderlands and Bulletstorm and a few other things and she didn't even know what they were.)

I'm a loser and even I haven't fallen this deep into the abyss.

This forum would be great except for a few early-teen-age(ish) posters who typify the "PC gaming master race" type mentality, and their endless self-reassurance topics about PC vs console gaming. The mods could help, but sadly don't seem to see it as part of their duty...

But if it's a specific game or subject you're interested in, then often a dedicated forum is best, such as;

Unreal Tournament/UT2004;

http://forums.epicgames.com/forum.php

and

http://forums.beyondunreal.com/

System Shock 1 and 2;

https://www.systemshock.org/index.php

Vogons (how to get old games running on newer systems);

Real discussions with real people, not over the internet.

All forums are bad.

Not at all, some are very good. As Arleas says, a large part of the problem is that due to the nature of the 'net, idiots can troll, criticise, or post anything they like, no matter how offensive, as they know that the precipitant can't punch them in the face. But there aren't many people like that, most people are decent, it's just that the morons are so loud and repetitive that they seem to be ubiquitous online.

And actually, if you look on Gamefaqs, the retro-machine forums are largely free of these idiots, as the people who still post on forums for commercially obsolete machines tend to be fans of the hardware and it's games, whereas trolls and other morons have to have the latest hardware to boost their patethic egos, so they drop older hardware as soon as they can and get the newest machines. Compare the PS2 or original XBox forums to the forums for the PS4 and XBox One, the former are filled with fans' discussions about the specific console and it's games, whereas the latter two forums are can't go two or three threads without someone loudly slagging off the opposing machine, with 'fanboy' logic and apparently the ability to see into the future and predict just when and how the opposing console will crash and burn.

It's the same with forums based around specific games - for an older game, you mostly just get fan posts that are frank and honest, with no rabid anti-other game posts, but on a post for a new game, you get all sorts of vitrol against other games, and against players of the same game.

Basically, morons like to have the newest hardware and games, so you see much less of their braindead posts on forums for older hardware/games.

I would say it's more about being where the most people are. For example, nobody really trolls the Steam board on gamefaqs (not that I've seen anyway) because there's few people on that board to troll.

They want to be where the action is, where they can get the most attention, and that's why this forum is riddled with trolls, but a forum for an older game or gaming system is relatively troll free.

You could also argue that it's a matter of percentages. There's always going to be a certain percentage of dicks in any given group, and the more people there are, the more likely you are to see someone acting like a jerk.

But in terms of active PC gaming discussion, is this as good as it gets? I've looked at some other boards, but they seem to churn out a daily topic that gets zero replies and quickly forgotten.

In my experience it's either "Game X is the pinnacle of design and I'll hear no criticism of it", "Game Y is irredeemable garbage and everyone should share my opinion", "Hardware vendor X/Y is the best/sucks/going down/shot my grandmother etc" or some pointless graphical wankery, there's relatively few threads that contain actual, civil discussion of gameplay.

I'd like to know of another forum besides this one.

This is the best I could find but that hardly says anything. This isn't "PC gaming" forum anymore, and I'm not talking about the hardware. I just don't like the taste of this place in the slightest. Since the modern consoles were starting getting bad, we got invaded by bad taste. I want it back... somewhere...

Well for JRPGs gamefaqs is very good. Outside Final Fantasy lol. Had some good talks on GOG about old PC games.
