I thoroughly enjoyed Tera, Dragon's Nest (Vindictus also), LOTR online, and Star Wars the old republic using strictly F2P "mode".

Edit: Guild Wars 2 is also great of course! And I think it recently had a big price drop didn't it?

Guild Wars 2 is fantastic. It doesn't make you feel like you HAVE to get on every day like some sort of chore.

-You can get all the flashy and fun abilities very early in the game
-you can reset your points to change your class build
-you can make really good looking armor with all the different armor dyes
-the graphics and cities are very well done
-very large world

There's some good "F2P" mmo's, but most of them have cash shops/microtransactions/premium content/P2W that end up costing much, much, much more than a subscription based mmo. And most of the time the purely F2P players that don't spend a dime get left in the dust.

Even a lot of the subscription based MMO's nowdays have cash shops, but those tend to be more fair since they're not the primary source of income.

Basically, if you want something completely free, prepared to get the short end of the stick. It's possible, but you'll end up spending 10x as much time to accomplish the same thing a paid player does, especially once you get to endgame.

TERA for the gameplay alone, shines above all other MMOs in that department

Curious myself if there are any good MMOs out there free or sub based. I haven't been able to find a MMO that I genuinely loved since City of Heroes.

GW2 is horrible. Its boring as hell. Its also pretty unoptimized.
