I hate how Windows 8 takes Control-Alt-Delete and end task as a suggestion

Sounds like you're doing it wrong. Go to the Details tab of Task Manager and look for your program in the list of processes, then end it from there.

Maybe this is why this topic is confusing me.

I always end programs from the processes tab. It always works instantly, even if the program refuses to respond.

In Windows 8, the task manager was modified a bit. The processes tab is now analogous to the old tasks tab. There is a new details tab which is analogous to the old processes tab. If you want to end a process in Windows 8 you should do it from the details tab and not the processes tab.

Still better than what you had to go through with Windows 95.

Quicker and more reliable to pop open a shell and make use of the kill command. Well technically in powershell it's Stop-process but kill is so much more satisfying.

Never had an issue killing a task aside from those random game crashes that block the entire screen even if you ctrl+shift+esc

There should be a fuse box on your house/apartment. Flip off the main breaker for the whole panel and this will shut down any programs running.

Even XP sometimes did this. If you don't end the actual process then you might as well just hit the red X.

P.S while ending the process is faster. You can speed things up by clicking on the app and cancelling when the message pops up.

Been this way since win 2000.
9x was the only versions that had task managers that actually end task.

In 2000 and newer, end the process, not the task. End task sends wm_close to the message pump. Then waits for a response. If the program is responding to messages then the program may not close.
From the process tab it actually ends the process.
