forgettable games (even for their time) like Legend of Legaia, Star Ocean 2

Star Ocean 2 is arguably the best RPG of that whole era, so that statement is pretty false

1998 is hard to beat.

Half-Life
Unreal
Rainbow Six
Baldur's Gate
Might and Magic VI
Grand Prix Legends
Falcon 4.0
Jane's WWII Fighters
StarCraft
Grim Fandango
Thief: The Dark Project
Sanitarium
Fallout 2
European Air War
Railroad Tycoon II
Tribes

Awesome year.

Going with this as well. Add in Xenogears, Metal Gear Solid, Alien Vs Predator ( I think) and I believe this was also the same year I discovered online gaming.

So was a very Big year for gaming for me.

Some not mentioned in 1998.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
Shogo: Mobile Armor
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six
Descent Freespace
Myth 2
Grand Theft Auto

1998 is the correct answer anything else is wrong, delusion, or weren't born yet.

You're pretty much the only person I've ever come across who suggests such a thing, considering

Suikoden I, II
Xenogears
Valkyrie Profile
Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9
Vagrant Story
Breath of Fire 4
Wild Arms 1, 2
Legend of Dragoon
Grandia

are far more likely to be considered PSX JRPG classics, whereas SO2 generally is not considered a classic except for perhaps by a few SO fanboys.

Without a doubt 1998. Nothing else compares. A few of the games are greatest of all time material in that one year, that's crazy

Forgot that 04 was pretty amazing but it's still 98

1998 is the best out of that list, but really the late 90's and very early 2000's was the golden age of video games. I wonder when we're going to crawl out of the dung age now.

Other - 1995. Yoshi's Island, Mega Man 7, Donkey Kong Country 2, and Chrono Trigger. I cannot remember or imagine a bigger number of games that were any greater than those ever coming out in one year.

Second place: 1987. Zelda 1, Metroid 1, Mega Man 1, and Castlevania 1. That was historically one of the most important years in all of gaming because of the genesis of all those very influential series. However, the games are not that great now. They have not aged nearly as well as the ones from 1995.

Third place: 1994. Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country 1, and Final Fantasy VI. Absolute classics, but those are the only ones I remember, so 1995 had more. Plus, DKC 1 wasn't as good as DKC 2, and FFVI wasn't as good as Chrono Trigger.
