And the expanded universe has never been considered canon. Lucas said so himself, I don't know why people are just now starting to complain about it.

They are taking away the licensing aren't they?

I don't see why Old Republic stuff can't be canon as it was set in a longer longer time ago. Perhaps they have plans for new Old Republic media.

After what bioware has done to the Old republic timeline, I rather it remains non canon now.

I think their plans going forward is that all media made will now be considered canon. Officially declaring everything up to this point as non-canon was so they could have a fresh slate.
