How is Mercenary Kings? I've been interested in it but a lot of the modern Contra-esque shooters seem to blow. Is it skillful, or is it more River City Ransom-y?

It's a lot of pattern recognition. It's less twitch based and more a matter of understanding enemy behavior. It's really, really awesome though. We have a review at our site, if you're interested.

i've played tons "ahem" of arcade games on m/kb and spamming action buttons is 100% identical since the layout is the exact same.

as for spamming left/right it's almost guaranteed you can spam them faster on keyboard by tapping with your index/middle fingers. fyi i cross my hands when playing if the arrow keys are mainly used for movement because left hand for movement is just more natural.

i would only recommend a controller if the keyboard has a problem with ghosting.

PC hardware doesn't need to match console hardware in price when PC gamers save literal thousands from the software they buy.

Yeah, you're right Asuca. It probably comes down more to nostalgia making a pad more preferable, since it's closer to the experience I remember.

Luckily this game is actually still good though, and not one of those nostalgia trips that bites you in the nuts during the first 5 minutes.

I would never, ever attempt a game like this on a keyboard. I'm bad enough with a pad. I remember the day I tried Spelunky with a keyboard. Was that ever a spectacle.

As for "Mercenary Kings", Metal Slug is majority pattern recognition so I'm fine with that. Someone described it to me as 2D Borderlands which really turned me off (made it sound more RPG grind than Contra), but your review makes it sound more Contra with light Borderlands. So heck, I'm in a good mood thanks to MS3, I'll check it out.

I almost did a spit take when I realized who the TC was.

"Who the hell is this as- OH GOD" *rushes to ignore*

Life is normally too short to purposely seek out things you hate, but apparently that rule doesn't apply on the Xbox One board.

Alright, I'm going in with kb/m. I'll keep you posted.

Why do so many games say it's better to use a controller anyway? Super Meat Boy, Guacamelee, etc. I didn't really see a time where it would have made a difference.
