Better build for friend

#1TheNeoVoidPosted 4/30/2014 12:16:03 PM
So one of my friends has decided to take the leap in PC gaming finally. He knows little about building PCs and thus asked me and my other friend to each come up with a build for under 700 dollars. He already has the OS, Keyboard/Mouse, Monitor, etc. We each came up with our own build but he can't decide which build he wants to use.

My build

Other friend's build

Which build do you guys believe is the better build for the price?

I wouldn't touch your other friend's build with a thirty-nine and a half foot pole.

other friend's build is by far better
your friend is just gonna end up streaming porn and play weak games like LoL anyways on it
no need to spend almost $700 just to do that

The other friend's build is actually very terrible. Besides, if you live near a microcenter you'd be silly in the head not to take advantage of their great prices on an i5/mobo combo.

A generation old A6 (advertised as a dual core but in actuality it's a single core with hardware accelerated hyperthreading, to oversimplify it) and a 650 are just bad buys by any metric at this point. You could get a Haswell pentium that would absolutely destroy it for just a few dollars more and you could get away with a $50 mobo without any performance hit (AMD processors need decent mobos to OC well, you can't OC current pentiums at all. Not exactly a fair comparison but that is an unlocked processor).

As for the 650, it's been replaced in pretty much every way by the 750. Same price, lower power requirements, better performance. There just isn't a case to make in favor of the 650 outside of maybe he already has one.

You're friends build is asinine. He's using an ancient weak APU (which has built in graphics) and pairing it with a discrete graphics card (which is also outdated). Then he's using a 600 watt power supply which is overkill. He's also using crazy fast overkill memory which would give him zero benefit. It will all work but it's like he threw together a rig by choosing the components randomly using dice rolls.

Would it be mean if I mention he spent 4,000 dollars building his own PC which is out performed by my 1,000 dollar pc I built? He built his in December and I built mine in last month.
