Any idea why Phenom II are still Expensive?

#1hk7111Posted 5/4/2014 5:08:12 PM
Seriously, Was checking some out as an Upgrade for a older AM3 box i gave to my Girlfriend, They're still pretty damn expensive. For what it would cost for a Middle of the road Phenom II, i could just grab a new MoBo and a More up to date CPU, that likely would be faster.

Any idea why they're still $100-$200?

I would have thought by now they would be a lot less.

its so sellers can ripoff people like you who want to upgrade an old system instead of getting a new one

Figure it would be something along those lines.

To be honest, im a broke Jobless 17 year old, it surprised me a bit when i tried to find a Cheap Quad core to throw into it. If i had the $200 to blow i would just Buy a new Mobo and Cpu and replace them, but i was hoping to find something along the lines of $40-$50.

Aren't they discontinued?

They're pretty good budget CPUs. My guess is prices are high because stock is low and demand is still up.

Pretty much this. I remember right when DDR3 became affordable DDR2 prices skyrocketed for some time. I remember Newegg wanting $80 for 4GB when two months prior you could buy 8GB for $40.

Yeah they're discontinued.
I also checked out 1st gen i7's Sure i can grab a nice one for $50 but its like $200+ for a Mobo... Seems if i were to upgrade it ever it is best just to Rebuild it, Which sucks, but Thankfully shes one of those people who cant see the difference between 30 FPS and 60, so that Athlon X2 @ 2.7Ghz and 6870 should do well for her for now.

CPUs never really get cheaper to produce. If they're still in production, there's your answer. If they're no longer in production, then the retailers who bought them at price X would be unwilling to sell them for less than X unless they had to.
