I don't see SotN as an RPG because character building is almost non-existent.

What do you define as "character building"? Alucard levels up. He gets magic skills. You can equip him with different abilities and equipment that change his attributes.

Here's another example: Borderlands. Is that an RPG? Again, why or why not? You have equipment, there are skill trees.

What about Zelda?

Fundamentally, I think what defines an RPG is the battle system. A game must have either a turn-based battle system (like most JRPGs) or a real-time battle system you'd find in WRPGs.

I'd say there's more to it than that. Otherwise, you've just classified games like Quake, Command & Conquer, and Mortal Kombat as RPGs.

1) World Of Warcraft

Despite me not playing this game anymore, I can't ignore that I did play it from 2004-2012 and no single game has lasted that long for me, there were days that I spent 14 hours playing and still felt like I could accomplish more. It's too big a part of my life to neglect from my top 3.
In fact, because of WoW I did not play any AAA releases until D3 came out, that's something to be said.

Is WoW even a RPG? Well, that argument seems to already be rampant ITT, so I'll just stay out of that.

2) Final Fantasy X

Not much to say other than it's my favourite single player game of all time and that includes all genres of the sort.

I loved the storytelling, gameplay, graphics and the fact that it was turn based.

3) It's a toss up between KOTOR and Skyrim... Going to say Skyrim.

Skyrim, huge sandbox game, lots of lore etc. Loved it.

I've never been into MMOs, so I won't comment on World of Warcraft, and I'm just now playing through Final Fantasy X on my Vita, so I'll have more to say about that later (so far it's amazing). Of course, KOTOR is universally acclaimed and for good reason, and Skyrim is incredible if you're into the wandering experience. So overall, I'd give you an 8/10 for KOTOR and Skyrim alone.

Here are mine:

1. Gothic II: Night of the Raven
2. Diablo II: Lord of Destruction
3. Dragon Age: Origins

1) Planescape: Torment
2) Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
3) Morrowind

Your post got skipped so I'll write something.

1) I have Planescape: Torment, but since I don't really care much about story in games, I still haven't played it.
2) VtM:B is one of my favourite, it's number 4 or 5 on my list.
3) I did have an interest in the game when I first heard about it, but I was playing other things then.
Later someone gave me Oblivion and I didn't like it. Even if Morrowind is 2-3 times better than Oblivion, judging by the praises it gets, I just think it won't be my cup of tea.

So, good list but not exactly the right kind for me except 2.

Character building. You define your character's stats and skills + alignment and choices when available. Every genre has some form of character building albeit shallow. For the game to be an RPG it needs to be meaningful. Of course that's not all that will define if a game is an RPG or not. As I said, the matter isn't black and white.

What about Zelda?

Zelda is most definitely not an RPG. It's an action adventure game with a silent protagonist.

Xenogears was great as far as I played it.
DA:O is probably the last thing BioWare will ever do right, thanks to EA.
FF6 never really clicked with me in the way that 5 did,

Mine:
