How do you feel about Escort segments in video games?

When I think of escort, I think of Goldeneye 007.

Such horror, having to protect Natalya is the nightmare of everyone I know.

Escorts NEED to be smart if they are killable, and not the kind that just stand in the middle of nowhere getting shot (or even get in your line of fire).

Frankly, I prefer them to just be invincible. I always felt like the escorts in Half-Life 2 and its episodes were invincible. If it wasn't the case, they just designed them well enough that they don't get in the way. And thats good.

I have very fond memories of escort missions in classic space sims like TIE Fighter or Wing Co.

Escort quests are terrible. You know the scenario where you have to protect a slow running NPC while enemies are shooting from 50 directions? And they just keep coming, while the NPC is slowly losing health. 30 meters from the objective and bam! GAME OVER.

How fun.

They need to die in a fire. Either the NPC is slow and it takes forever or the NPC is an idiot and dies easily. There are no fun escort missions. Worse than QTE.

This lol.

If it was done right it could be cool... Unfortunately it's never done right. You're always given a wimpy unit that can't take more than 2 or 3 hits before dying and every enemy in the game will focus on the wimpy unit instead of you, and you basically have to run interference the entire time.

it's no fun.

I remember the old "protect the people" missions from cobra triangle being frustrating at times. That was not an escort mission but it was the essence of what I hate about them.
Helpless vips, enemies more numerous then anywhere else in the game, and the feeling of a slow death that can't be helped.

I play too many different games to even care.

it depends entirely on how there handled and just how much control you have over the AI. i dont feel all of them are universally ****. Ashley from RE4 i felt was a pretty good escort AI(for the most part). shed duck and get behind you when you aimed, you could tell her to stay put or come with, tell her to hide in areas ect. you had a larger degree of control over her than in most other games which led to less frustrating moments.

The only "escort" mission I've ever not hated was in Bioshock Infinite and that's because I don't want to fail because of a stupid NPC.

That's why I absolutely despise Resident Evil 4 despite it's popularity. Escort missions/games always suck unless the person you're escorting is in story alone.

Gotta love the escorts where they move slower than you run, but they move faster than you walk.

I have to disagree. Ashley was actually fairly tough to everything besides Leon's own attacks, anything you do directly to her is an instakill but you can torture her with environmental damage (bear traps, lanterns, etc) and it'll barely put a dent in your healing supplies, especially since 90% of enemies won't attack her since they're under orders to take her alive and all it takes is one shot or even a knife swipe to incapacitate them once they've grabbed her. If that's still not enough you can make her tougher if you want. Couple that with RE4's adaptive difficulty (struggle with certain enemies and their health rolls will drop, miss a lot of shots and ammo will drop, Ashley gets grabbed a lot and she'll get grabbed less, pretty much every aspect of Normal's difficulty is dynamic, all professional does is lock every enemy variable to its highest value) and the fact that you can have her handle the 'Mash A to open the gate!' sequences and she should never be frustrating.

As for WoW's escort quests, I remember one, in Cata I think, where Harrison Jones escorts you. You just follow him around while he destroys everything. I think they realized how bad they were at making them.
