How do you feel about Escort segments in video games?

Escort missions are terrible. The best I've ever dealt with were in Sacred 2, and they don't work too well in a lot of cases.

The NPC you're escorting will charge into battle if they're capable of fighting. That's not too bad, you just have to keep an eye on their health. The ones who can't fight run away from the enemy, generally keeping them out of danger. The problem is that the AI sometimes has them run TOWARD the enemy, causing them all to attack the NPC at once.

Simply, the AI is better than some, but it's still pretty bad.

Well, Elizabeth was god damn helpful and awesome in Bioshock Infinite. So, as long as escort missions are done as well as in that game, they're fine by me.

For the most part terrible. I personally hate doing any escort quest but realize they are a part of RPG elements. The problem is companies tend to go about them the wrong way normally making the NPC too damn slow. The quests are slow and boring enough compared to others without an NPC that walks.

characters like Elizabeth dont even qualify as escort missions when they cant even die. shes basically just a glorified quest market/ammo dispenser.

Depends on the game. As mentioned Elizabeth wasn't done too badly. But MMOs use it as a cheap way to make a filler quest. Worst part of any escort style quest is when the escort npc glitches out. You either have to ditch the quest or go back and talk to the npc and start from the start a-f***ing-gain, sometimes for the fourth time in a row. It's lazily done and half the time completely unnecessary. I don't care how the stupid npc walked over to the place where he made his last stand, it's entirely irrelevant.

I liked that one in Tera where you had to escort that slow ass unicorn. I didn't like it when I did it, but I liked ganking people while they tried to complete it.

I can't believe this topic made it halfway through page two without a single mention of Dead Rising.

You think you hated escort missions before? You don't know what true pain is.

In general I am against them. This isn't so much because of the style of play it engenders, however. More it is because so few games manage to get this trope right. In most games that have these segments there are issues preventing it from being fun. Either the map layout is poorly designed, or enemy AI or placement is handled badly, or the camera can't track you properly to keep tabs on your asset. When escort segments are done right they can be exceptionally fun. Very few developers ever get it right, though.
