How do you feel about Escort segments in video games?

Depends on the game. As mentioned Elizabeth wasn't done too badly.

Also, as mentioned, that's not an escort mission. She can't be kidnapped or killed or cause a fail state in any way.

Eileen is the sole reason nobody likes The Room, i wanted to protect her because her crazy when she gets hurt badly, stressed me the hell out, but not because I really cared about her

characters like Elizabeth dont even qualify as escort missions when they cant even die. shes basically just a glorified quest market/ammo dispenser.

she is essentially CoD's Mr. Follow, just gussied up a bit

Depends on the game. In Fatal Frame 2 I loved having Mayu around, (though it onyy happens a very small percentage of the game) because I cared about the characters.

executed correctly, they can be just as engaging and enjoyable as anything.

unfortunately, they are almost always executed poorly because most people don't know how to do them right just yet

If they're capable of defending themselves decently, and aren't an impressive burden on my progression, I can tolerate them. But if they're slow, helpless, death-prone or annoying, I think I'd rather choke than deal with them.

For the most part im not happy about them BUT some developers know how to make them good.

valve half life 2 Alyx is technically an escort BUT she can use weapons herself, and either has a lot of hp or it regens fast (cant remember sorry) so it doesnt feel like an escort, not that i can remember anyone else, but im pretty sure i have played some and, aside from alyx, didnt like them...

..or one exception, tried the last of us, wasnt too bad there, but given that i had the most fun with that game on easy (i could play it on normal but then it didnt feel fun) not sure if it counts...

There used to be an early WoW quest that had an escort quest that took like 20 minutes to complete.

Just one? :-D I vaguely recall that there was at least one if not two or three per faction in the sub-20 quests. I suspect you're referring to the one in Darkshore where you have to escort a druid who keeps falling asleep every 2 minutes.

Almost all of the negative comments here are pinned to WoW escort quests. If we were only talking about these, then he'll yes; escort quests of that kind are absolutely god-awful time sinks that should be banned from game design.

I refuse to believe that escort quests are just universally bad though. If it's not designed around a brain dead and weakling NPC you don't care about then it can be pretty interesting or even fun.

It's not really just the ones from World of Warcraft so much as virtually every escort quest that follows the same model. Even games like Rift that have similar escort quests tend to make them the sort where you'd rather cure constipation with a chainsaw than do the quest.

I enjoyed attacking the Enclave next to that big-*** robot in Fallout 3.

That was an escort quest, but it was basically Liberty Prime escorting you, rather than vice versa. Plus it was a superpowered killing machine.

Fun fact. Rift has two separate quests, one per faction in their respective starter/backstory zones, where you have giant robots clearing out hordes of trash mobs for you. In Soviet Rift quest NPC escorts you! But only for those two quests that I'm aware of. :-(

Escort missions are terrible. The best I've ever dealt with were in Sacred 2, and they don't work too well in a lot of cases.

The NPC you're escorting will charge into battle if they're capable of fighting. That's not too bad, you just have to keep an eye on their health. The ones who can't fight run away from the enemy, generally keeping them out of danger. The problem is that the AI sometimes has them run TOWARD the enemy, causing them all to attack the NPC at once.

Simply, the AI is better than some, but it's still pretty bad.

TBH Sacred 2 probably has some of the worst escort quests as well. There's one in chapter/act 2 involving orcs (or was it ogres?) where there are so many enemies floating around the orc village that your charges disappear off-screen before you know it. Likewise there's one early on in chapter/act 1 that starts as soon as the trigger NPC is between 5 and 10 yards away from the edge of your screen, and as a non-combat NPC she's incredibly fragile and almost always dies before you even realize you have the quest. In fact I've only successfully completed that quest twice.

Then again Sacred 2 had much bigger issues to contend with like its buggy patching (having to apply specific patches in a specific order depending on circumstances), high-res texture pack that could crash the game for many if not most people, and PhysX code that crashes the game within an hour due, IIRC, to a memory leak. That last one makes me a very sad panda as Sacred 2 was one of the reasons why I bought a GTS 450 for a dedicated PPU. :-/

it's good as long as its not part of the gameplay,
example: sokolov in MGS3

I remember the most frustrating one being Robotech: Battlecry. Basically so hard, made me quit the game. It was long ago, I barely remember it. Tried for many hours to intercept these fighters before they blow up your ship, but I just couldn't do it...
