RPG Codex votes and reviews the top 70 PC RPG's of all time. Thoughts?

The combat engine doesn't define an RPG.

Who said it did?

And Mass Effect 2 does the roleplay thing better than many games. Certainly better than the original Mass Effect, where all I ever did was just go all top choices, or all bottom choices. In ME2 I actually mixed it up, and occasionally did Paragon / Renegade actions, as my character would do.

Right, roleplaying in ME2, where you pick crappy presets goody two-shoes, jerk, or neutral answers which really don't reflect at all what the player wants and a karma feature which locks you out of choices not based on stats [because there aren't any] but based on the karma choices you've made before [lmao] as if not being a jerk in the beginning of a journey meant you couldn't be a jerk in the end.

And character progression is a secondary feature in the game, you can beat it with no effort by just using your guns on the highest difficulty. Certainly a TPS with RPG elements.

It's definitely a far better RPG than something like Dark Souls

I question your intelligence

Yeaaah, no. Absolutely mediocre story, combined with clumsy combat, a dull leveling, bad DLC, forgettable party members copy/pasted from previous Bioware offerings, boring loot, a morality system that touted having no right or wrong choice but in reality had a "best" choice for nearly every major decision, plenty of illusion of choice in dialogue (where you had several options of things to say, but they all led to the same place), race generally mattering little outside of the origin + returning to your home...

I'm sorry you lack the taste to appreciate DA:O. And every time you could make a decision, there were multiple outcomes, much better than the 3 presets in babby's first action game with rpg elements.

This is a decent list that tries to hard to herald the 1998-2002 era games a little too much. And putting FO:NV above dark souls or KOTOR 2 above KOTOR 1 (at least based on what they actually initially published) is just plain stupid.

Disagree. It's a considerably better game for the vast majority of the experience.

I like the list generally, except that New Vegas shouldn't be on it.

I often find that what PC gamers consider to be "great RPG's" are incompatible with what I consider to be "great games". Narrative, and narrative choice. That's what I care about when it comes to RPG's. Stats and turn based combat can go blow themselves.
