will i notice a difference between the pro vs evo if the ssd is only used for os, program startups i.e thunderbird, chrome, steam, origin etc

Not really no. The biggest differences between the 840 and 840 pro were the write speeds and the type of memory they used. The 840 Evo uses the same memory as the 840 but its write speeds are much closer to the 840 Pro due to them using more smaller flash chips vs a handful of big ones.

Just get the EVO, TC. The little bit of extra performance for the Pro isn't worth it.

Why wouldn't you want the most current technology? The M550 is newer and better than either.
