I am thinking of getting a new computer and for some games I prefer to play on my TV via HDMI and some I would prefer on my monitor with DVI. I plan on getting a card such as a 270x or 280.

Most of the time, I am only going to use one screen at a time (Windows Key + P to switch between them).

Will I have any problems with this configuration? And will my TV get sound from the HDMI port?

Let me know,
Thanks

No problems, and yes you can pass sound through the HDMI port.

I do this, I just clone them and not bother switching.

If your monitor is the same resolution as the TV it may be easier to just clone.

To get sound you just have to set your HDMI port as the default device in the sound settings (right click the speaker in the task bar>playback devices> right click the GPUs HDMI output> select "set as default device").

Do the same to your normal sound device to restore sound to your normal speakers when done (e.g. in my case select Asus D2x).

Cloning can cause problems with a select few games but yeah it's probably going to be easier overall. It's what I do.

Thanks!

Unfortunately I am still using a 720p TV and a 1080p monitor.

A little different topic, is there a way from keeping my icons on my desktop from reshuffling after switching from 720 to 1080 in this matter?

Thanks

Get a 1080p TV so that the icons aren't moved around by the shrinking resolution.
