This is probably a stupid question, but I'm not sure where else to ask...

That sounds a tad more accurate... But when I'm actually reading the specific letters, I pronounce it as "lite - on." "lite - eee - on" never even occurred to me. Neither did "lit - eee - on."

Isn't their logo "LightOn" or in some cases "Light-ON"?

Can't say that I've ever had a need to pronounce it aloud now that you mention it. As for the brand itself, there's nothing especially bad about LightOn that doesn't also apply to most low end commodity optical drives. They're all in that "meh, it's an optical drive" range

They're more "meh" now, but I still recall for several years, when people would come here asking for help with their optical drive not working, the board's very first question was "is it a LiteOn?"

And 9 times out of 10, the answer was yes. That gave them a pretty bad reputation in my book.

I remember that time period, but I also remember just how many systems ended up with those drives period be it OEM prebuilts or custom machines so it makes sense that they'd show up in a lot of failures. I also come from the generation where anything that wasn't Plextor SCSI was crap so that perhaps gives me a more dim view overall.

Oh, I went through the SCSI phase too... heh I still had a pretty terrible opinion of LiteOn tho, and that's never really gone away, although they've at least improved their reliability record.

I'd evolve my Eevee into that.
