i7-4790k worth ditching the 2500k for?

I have the upgrade itch but I have not seen a CPU worth upgrading to yet. Is the new refresh worth looking into just for the 4.0 ghz stock speed?

There is more to account for than just the ghz. Are you just gaming or are you doing more? If you are upgrading just for gaming, the 4790k is not worth it as an i5 is going to perform just as well. If HT is something useful to you than the I7 4790k is a great upgrade.

Pretty much only game on my PC and that's it. I play mmorpgs and stuff like Battlefield 4, Arma 3, etc.

Ahh, well the extra expense of the I7 series is going to nothing to improve your gaming. With the I7 you are paying for hyperthreading. It does nothing for gaming, it is more for video editing, multitasking etc.

I would recommend the I5 4670k if you like to overclock. If not get the I5 4690. Both are big upgrades over your 2500k and both are the best you will get currently for gaming.

You should try overclocking the 2500k

Generally, Haswell didn't improve the performance that much. You'd still see a noticeable boost in really CPU limited games like Starcraft 2 though.

But if you do upgrade, it's preferable to get an i7. A few games already benefit by having more than 4 cores/threads, so it's highly likely that an i7 will age better than an i5.

How is it in the future? Currently games run identically on the i5 as they do on the i7. There is no sense in gambling that in the i7's lifetime game developers will suddenly start taking advantage of its options. The money saved will be better spent on something that is actually going to improve his gaming, not something that might have a chance in the distant future.
